Numerous transvaginal mesh (TVM) lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer Ethicon, Inc., and the federal litigation established in the U.S. District Court, Southern District of West Virginia continues to proceed. On June 5, 2013, a court order granted the plaintiff’s steering committee leave to file an another reply to support the defense motion requiring the preservation of extracted mesh. A hearing on the defense motion has been scheduled for June 14, 2014, at 10 a.m., according to court records.

Women filing vaginal mesh lawsuits have needed the device surgically removed after suffering serious complications including migration, ectopic pregnancy, perforation and others that lead to excruciating pain.
Court records note that more than 18,000 lawsuits are currently pending, and all of the cases claim that Ethicon failed to provide sufficient warnings against the risks linked to transvaginal mesh devices, which are used to treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP) and stress urinary incontinence. The plaintiffs also allege that the devices have a defective design and were brought to market without adequate testing.
