Women around the country have filed TVM lawsuits against manufacturers of these products after suffering serious complications because of the device that led to the need for surgical removal of the mesh.
Many cases have been brought to trial, but more are continuing to be filed in New Jersey, where there are two separate litigations happening in Atlantic Superior Court.
A case list from Sept. 5, 2014, showed that there have now been thousands of lawsuits filed against C.R. Bard and Johnson & Johnson’s subsidiary Ethicon. C.R. Bard is now facing 1,557 claims while Ethicon faces more than 7,000 suits.
“We are not surprised that the number of lawsuits continues to increase in the two mesh litigations underway in Atlantic County,” lawyers representing women in transvaginal mesh cases said in a statement.

The claims state that that mesh devices, which are used to treat stress urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse, have caused chronic pain, erosion, scarring, infection and other complications.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration first warned the public about the serious risk of injury associated with transvaginal mesh in 2008 and the number of lawsuits had continued to grow since then. At that time, the agency reported receiving at least 1,000 complaints over three years. Then in July 2011, the FDA issued a second alert stating that the number of complaints regarding mesh devices had tripled since 2008 and that injuries resulting from the use of this product were “not rare.”
Court documents note that there are 19,380 current Ethicon lawsuits filed in a multidistrict litigation in the Southern District of West Virginia. There are also 9,600 claims against C.R. Bard.
